The Bare Pit - 'cos naturists have adventures too, y'know!

The Cast
Many characters have appeared in the series since its inception - whilst some originate from the preceding series - Loxie & Zoot - most others had their first appearance in the The Bare Pit. There are five main characters and the role played supporting characters varies from minimal to significant - in fact, some stories feature only supporting characters. This cast page covers characters from both series.
Spoiler warning: many of these character descriptions contain some plot spoiler elements!

Main Characters

Loxie Loxie Smith
Loxie wasn't a nudist until she met her future husband Zoot. Despite some initial doubts and apprehension, her experiments with naturism found her falling in love with the lifestyle. This did not go over well with her very conservative family! Loxie worked as a professional photographer before becoming a co-owner/manager of the Koala Bay Bares Naturist Resort with Zoot.

Factoid: Both Loxie and Zoot were born on the same day.

Zoot Zoot Jansen
Zoot, along with his wife Loxie, is a co-owner of the Koala Bay Bares Naturist Resort. This has helped him realise the dream of a lifetime... to go to work nude! Raised in a naturist family, Zoot has grown up a lifelong nudist. Whilst clothes aren't anathema to him, he has been known to forget to get dressed when venturing into the textile world. Zoot also has an interest in writing for TV and has a few ideas in the pipeline (none of them very original).

Willow Willow Spicer
Willow is a third year student of Hospitality Management at Koala Bay College, Willow works part-time as a 'Girl Friday' for the Koala Bay Bares Naturist Resort. As part of this arrangement she lives on-site at the resort in her own cabin. Willow is tall (as in 6'1"), so she towers over most of the other women at the Resort... and quite a few of the men as well! She has a very slim build, due mostly to her vegan diet and active lifestyle. Willow has a somewhat serious but kind-hearted disposition, she gets easily irritated by people who mock her lifestyle and often gets into activist mode.

Tash Tash Spicer
Tash (Natasha) is a free-spirited young woman presently unemployed. She supports herself through making weird and wonderful jewelry then selling them through local markets. She and her boy friend Herb were on a trip around the country in their old VW combi. This led Tash to visit her cousin Willow at the Koala Bay Bares... which is where they've stayed ever since. Tash has a feisty but very friendly and cheerful personality, she can be a bit gullible sometimes as she wants to see the best in everyone until they give her reason to think otherwise.

Herb Herb Wintly
Herb is a very sedate guy. While he doesn't say much he is very friendly and accepting of others even when they are not on his wavelength. He's very much on Tash's wavelength and has been madly in love with her since meeting her a few years ago. Herb enjoys playing the bongos in improvised music jams with as many other musicians as possible. He recently came into a tidy sum of money via an inheritance and figures that, providing he spends it meagerly, it'll tide him over for a few years until he works out what he's doing with himself.

Koala Bares Residents

Koala Bares residents
These characters live on the grounds of the Koala Bay naturist resort. They are, for the most part, full-time nudists and some of them tend to be a bit insular as a result. All were originally introduced in Loxie & Zoot. Their ages range from late middle age to old to very old! (The main characters Loxie, Zoot, Willow, Tash, and Herb Wintley are also residents but are younger and less insular.)

Mungo Mungo
Somewhat eccentric resident of the Koala Bares. Mungo lives in a colourful self-built yurt and grows his own organic 'bush tucker'. He also seems to go by the name "Wirinun" which is an Australian Aboriginal word for wizard or 'medicine-man'. He offers massage, meditation and mystic healing to visitors of the resort. No one can remember ever seeing him wear a single stitch of clothing, even in the colder months. Has an uncanny ability to know what is about to happen before it does!

Herb retired from building work a few years ago and now lives at the Koala Bay Bares Naturist Resort with his wife Val. Oscar Oscar
Oscar the Emu is harmless... mostly! To be on the safe side, visitors to the Koala Bares are advised to avoid his turf in the tall grass behind the volleyball courts. In actuality this imposingly tall bird has never hurt anyone but does enjoy giving some people a run for their money.

Bare Pit appearance(s): [Birthday Suits]

Koala Bares Regulars

Aria Aria
The youngest Bare in the cast spent most of the Loxie & Zoot Koala Bares as a bump in her mother's stomach - arriving in somewhat spectacular fashion towards the end! No doubt she'll be pursuing her family's naturist lifestyle but until she's properly toilet trained she'll be staying in nappies (that's diapers to you United Statesians) .
First appearance: Loxie & Zoot: The Koala Bares (page 7.01)
Bare Pit appearance(s): [Birthday Suits]

Koala Bares Visitors

These characters have dropped into the Koala Bay Bares naturist resort for a whole range of reasons.

Abúi Abúi/"Abby"
A faerie from the webcomic Rogues of Clwyd-Rhann by Reinder Dijkhuis. In Incoginto, a 10 page guest story by Dijkhuis, Abúi discovers she has accidentally teleported herself to the Koala Bay Bares. As a faerie she is very comfortable with her nudity although concealing her wings and pointed ears without clothing proves more difficult. Her quest to return home continues in Enchanted.
First Bare Pit appearance: Incognito (p. 1)
Other appearances: [Enchanted]
Ben Ben Morrison
A police officer with the Koala Bay PD. His first recreational visit to the Koala Bay Bares with fellow officer Tina Ellis was undertaken with much forboding and angst due to concerns he had about his penis which he believes is "inadequately sized".
First appearance: Chicken Little (p. 1)
Carl Carl Drummond
Carl is a news camera-man for Koala Bay TV station Channel 5. Although he doesn't initially consider himself a naturist he isn't adverse to a bit of streaking when the mood takes him.
First appearance: Loxie & Zoot:
The Koala Bares (page 2.11
)
Bare Pit cameos:
[Birthday Suits]
Jenny Everywhere Jenny Everwhere
Shifting as she does from one dimension/universe to the next with effortless ease Jenny has a nack for showing up in the wrong place at the right time. She's a bit of a problem solver which is a good thing for the Koala Bares, because they've got a ghost problem and the Ghostbusters aren't in town. (Jenny Everywhere is a common use non-copyrighted character.)
First appearance: Loxie & Zoot:
Ghost Story (page 1)
Bare Pit cameo(s):
[Birthday Suits]
John John O'Dell
An officer with the Australian Federal Police. His first visit to the Koala Bay Bares (along with fellow officer Belinda) was in pursuit of some very slippery jewel thieves - an undercover operation that introduced him to naturism!
First appearance: Loxie & Zoot:
It's a Nood, Nood, Nood, Nood World (page 9
)
Bare Pit appearance(s):
[Birthday Suits]
Kylie Kylie Burns
Kylie was a reporter for Koala Bay TV station Channel 5. She knows what she wants and has the tendency to be a bit snappy. She can also seem to be somewhat aloof and certainly did not win herself many friends in her TV days. Groups of people getting naked was one one of the most outrageous things she could imagine and she initially percieved the naturists at the Koala Bares to be a bunch of deviants. Certain events however changed her way of looking at things. These days she has a much more relaxed outlook.
First appearance: Loxie & Zoot:
The Koala Bares (page 2.11)
Other L&Z cameos:
[First time for Everything] [It's a Nood, Nood, Nood, Nood World]
Bare Pit appearance(s):

First appearance: Loxie & Zoot: It's a Nood, Nood, Nood, Nood World (page 6)
Sven Sven Allestädes
An eccentric interdimensional traveller able to move himself and others into various alternate realities. Sven arrives at the Koala Bares at the request of Mungo in an attempt to take another trans-dimensional traveller, the faerie Abúi, back to her homeworld. Allestädes is Swedish for "everywhere" and is a very big tip of the hat to the common use non-copyrighted character Jenny Everywhere.
First appearance: Enchanted (p. 1)
Tina Tina Ellis
A police officer with the Koala Bay PD. Tina was first introduced in Loxie & Zoot as she investigates a string of jewelry thefts. Tina takes her work very seriously but also has a playful nature. Her parents were regulars at the Koala Bay Bares when she was a kid but she decided it wasn't "her thing" once she grew up. She has, however, found renewed interest in the lifestyle.
First appearance: Loxie & Zoot: It's a Nood, Nood, Nood, Nood World (pages 9-10, although her role isn't expanded until page 46)
Bare Pit appearance(s): [Chicken Little] [Birthday Suits]
The Jansens (Zoot's family)
Gerhard Gerhard
Zoot, Felix and Famke's father. Gerhard is a writer and, to quote his daughter Famke, is "semi-mega-rich". However, to also quote Famke, "he's also a total philandering playboy". At the start of Birthday Suits we find that Gerhard is currently up to wife number 4. He's been a life-long naturist and has some disdain for people who have hang-ups about nudity.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.3)
Sabrina Sabrina (nee Zamanik)
Gerhard's fourth wife - an American who calls herself Zoot's (and Famke's) "step-mom". At 21 years old, Sabrina's not the brightest bulb but she readily expresses her love for Gerhard... or is it all just an act?
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.3)
Marta Marta
Zoot, Felix and Famke's mother and Gerhard's first wife. A jolly and personable type she nevertheless can be quite bossy and is prone to losing her temper and swearing (in her native Dutch tounge) if things are not to her liking. Supressing such urges gives her a facial tic. Marta is also partial to a drop (or three) of Dutch gin. Like Gerhard, Marta is a life-long naturist and was determined to raise a naturist family.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.7)
Felix Felix
Zoot and Famke's brother. The middle child of the family, Felix has a cheerful and easygoing personality - rather than get involved in his family's antics and dramas he'll just roll his eyes and take refuge as far away as possible and let Zoot do all the work trying to sort out the problem. Currently in a relationship with Maurice.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.6)
Famke Famke
Zoot and Felix's sister. The youngest in the family by ten years Famke acknowledges she was clearly an unintended addition to the family. Very outgoing, Famke makes friends easily but won't hesitate to speak her mind if she thinks something is wrong. Still lives with her mother and despite a sometimes tempetuous relationship the two are very close.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.6)
Maurice Maurice Kelso
Felix's boyfriend. Maurice is a bit of a drama queen who engages his mouth before his brain and doesn't really care what others might think about what he says. Given his love of double entendres, fully laden inuendo and risqué puns Maurice has the tendency to make the somewhat more tactful Felix very uncomfortable.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.6)
The Smiths (Loxie's family)
Eric Eric
Loxie and Janelle's father. Eric is very grumpy and terse, even moreso when confronted by something he doesn't like... and he really doesn't like his son-in-law Zoot and the crazy nudist cult that Loxie has been "brainwashed"into. He loves his daughter despite what he regards as her very poor lifestyle choice. Eric's prefered method of dealing with anything confronting is to ignore it and go fishing and/or not talk about the problem.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.9)
Lorraine Lorraine
Loxie and Janelle's mother. Like Eric, Lorraine is very unhappy about Loxie becoming involved in nudism - and she blames Zoot for this 100%. She is convinced, despite her daughter's re-assurances to the contrary, that the so-called "naturist resort" is really a camp-out for perverted deviants. Her preference when talking to Loxie over the phone is to never ever mention the n-words (naturism, nude, naked, nuddy...) and to always "picture" her daughter on the other end of the phone-line fully dressed.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.9)
The Bentleys (also Loxie's family!)
Janelle Janelle
Loxie's older sister. Janelle knows what she likes and naturism is not one of those things. When younger she was a very bossy and demanding older sister. Like her mother and father she has dim view of Loxie's lifestyle, business and husband choice. Despite this, Loxie still feels a degree of affection towards her older sisiter. Janelle is a total control freak and tries to rule her family with an iron fist, generally with little success, mainly due to Bob's "ineptness".She is prone to suffering from extreme migraines.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.33)
Bob Bob
Janelle's husband/Loxie's brother-in-law. Bob is a bit of a bumbler who hasn't really made the best decisions in life. He also isn't the best father, leaving the parenting to Janelle. His preference is to abandon all responsibility and go fishing at the first sign of trouble. Although he agrees with Janelle's tirades against Loxie's lifestyle it's mostly to quickly to the end of the tirade - in truth he wonders what the fuss is about but wouldn't dare say it to Janelle.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.33)
Nathan Nathan
Loxie's newphew/ Sally and Bobby's older brother. Nathan has little time for his younger siblings and their antics. He is a schemer, always trying to find a way to outfox his authoritarian mother and do whatever he wants to. Aged 16, he is very, very interested in the fact that his Aunt Loxie is a nudist who (or so he believes) lives in a "colony full of naked women". His teenaged male mind has extrapolated many scenarios and he has done much research about 'nudists' over the (highly reliable) internet and knows that he too is a nudist. Now all he has to do is get into the "colony"...
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.33)
Sally Sally
Loxie's niece/ Nathan's younger and Bobby's older sister. Sally is very, very keen to be a good girl and do exactly as her mother says. The bane of her existence is her younger brother Bobby who she can't stand - he's always calling her a 'cry-baby' and 'goody-two-shoes' and everything he does annoys her. Unfortunately, Sally's over-reactions to Bobby's antics and Bobby's claims of innocence will often elicit a punitive response from her mother... against her, with Bobby getting off scott-free! Her older brother doesn't stand up for her or take her side at all - she wishes she had no brothers!
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.33)
Bobby Bobby (Bob Jnr)
Loxie's nephew/Nathan and Sally's youngest brother. Bobby is a real mischief maker and, despite being several years younger than his sister, he really enjoys tormenting her (often by abducting and holding to ransom her dolls). The fact that she is so reactive to his antics only makes his job easier. Despite his mother's authoritarian regime (or perhaps because of it) he is always finding ways to cause trouble and get away with it.
First appearance: Birthday Suits (p.33)
The Bensons
Craig & Jen Craig and Jen
Craig has been thinking about heading out to the Koala Bares for quite a while but hasn't quite worked up the nerve to tell his family, let alone take them along. The Open Day provides that opportunity... although Jen is anything but happy about the idea.
First appearance (Craig): Loxie & Zoot: The Koala Bares (page 4.07)
First appearance (Jen): Loxie & Zoot: The Koala Bares (page 5.23)
Other L&Z appearances (both): [Guest artist Noodtoon #3]
Jim & Abby Jim and Abby
These twins are students in Nick Aletti's class at school. Nick thinks Abby is "evil"... although that assessment might be a bit unfair! Neither Jim or Abby are very impressed about their father's decision to take the whole family out to visit the "nudie colony" even if they don't have to get undressed while there.
First appearance (both): : Loxie & Zoot: The Koala Bares (page 5.23)

Others

Characters that might show up in the comic from time to time that don't fit into the above catagories!

Tex Tyler Tex Tyler
A neighbour and long time nemesis of the Koala Bay Bares. Tex is no fan of Loxie, Zoot or any other "nudies" and has, in past Loxie & Zoot stories, concocted a number of unsuccessful schemes to close them down. Mostly notably he has disguised himself as a nudist named "Sven", pretended to be a ghost and has also tried to frame Loxie and Zoot for theft. Tex has been lying low so far and hardly been seen at all in The Bare Pit. But who knows - that may change!
First appearance: Loxie & Zoot: The Koala Bares (page 1.03)
Other L&Z appearances: [Ghost Story] [It's a Nood, Nood, Nood, Nood World]
Bare Pit cameo(s):
[Enchanted] [Tales to Scare Your Pants Off]

First appearance: Loxie & Zoot: The Koala Bares (page 3.02)
